I Can Blink!

Baby size this weekAbout the size of an eggplant

Your baby this week

Your baby can blink now! The eyelashes are fully grown, and your baby can track light and turn toward it. The brain is developing billions of neurons — enough to learn everything about this world you'll show your baby. Your baby is practicing breathing by inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid, making the diaphragm stronger. If your baby hears a song often enough, it might even recognize it after birth — so keep singing.

Your body this week

Prenatal visits increase to every two weeks now. Your uterus is well above your belly button. You may feel clumsy as your center of gravity has shifted. Heartburn, back pain, and fatigue are constant companions. Some women develop PUPPP — itchy rashes on stretch marks. Try sleeping propped up if heartburn keeps you awake. You're doing incredible work.

Common symptoms this week

Every pregnancy is different — you may notice some of these, all of them, or none at all. None of this is a checklist to worry over.

  • Feeling clumsy and off balance
  • Heartburn
  • Back pain and fatigue
  • Itchy rash on stretch marks (PUPPP)

This week’s checklist

  • Prenatal visits now every 2 weeks — keep all appointments
  • Anti-D injection if Rh-negative (if not done at week 27) — may need to arrange from a blood bank
  • Start packing your hospital bag
  • Sleep on your side from now on (preferably left) — back sleeping in the third trimester may increase risk
  • Practice breathing and relaxation techniques for labour
  • Discuss your birth plan with your doctor

What’s normal this week

Most of what you’re feeling is your body doing exactly what it should — the everyday symptoms don’t need a call. The signs below are the rare exceptions: noticing one doesn’t mean something’s wrong, just that it’s worth a quick check.

When to call your doctor

  • Itchy rash that is severe or spreading (could be PUPPP or cholestasis)
  • Reduced fetal movements
  • Signs of preterm labour: regular contractions, back pain, pelvic pressure
