Your baby this week

Your baby is practicing everything it will need — breathing, swallowing, sucking, and blinking! The fingernails and toenails have grown all the way to the fingertips. The skin is getting smoother as your baby fills out with more fat. The bones of the skull are soft and flexible on purpose — they'll overlap during delivery to help your baby fit through, and then they'll round out. Your baby is beautifully designed for this.

Your body this week

You may feel uncomfortably large and every position seems wrong. Constipation may worsen. Shortness of breath is at its peak. You might leak urine when laughing, sneezing, or coughing — Kegels help! The nesting instinct may have you cleaning and organizing obsessively. Your skin may feel dry and tight. Eight more weeks — the countdown is on.

Every pregnancy is different — you may notice some of these, all of them, or none at all. None of this is a checklist to worry over.

What’s normal this week

Most of what you’re feeling is your body doing exactly what it should — the everyday symptoms don’t need a call. The signs below are the rare exceptions: noticing one doesn’t mean something’s wrong, just that it’s worth a quick check.

When to call your doctor

  • Any bleeding
  • Sudden gush of clear fluid
  • Baby moving much less than usual
