Your baby this week

Your baby is shedding the last of its vernix coating into the amniotic fluid and swallowing it — it will become part of your baby's first poop. The vocal cords are fully developed and ready for that first cry. Your baby's grasp reflex is so strong that it will be able to grip your finger the moment you meet. Soon your baby will hear your voice without the muffling — so soon now.

Your body this week

You're officially 'full term' — baby can arrive any day and be perfectly healthy! You may feel increased pelvic pressure, frequent Braxton Hicks, and an emotional rollercoaster. Loose stools can be a sign that labour is approaching. You might feel a burst of energy (nesting) or extreme fatigue. Cervical dilation may be starting. Trust your body — it knows what to do.

Common symptoms this week

Every pregnancy is different — you may notice some of these, all of them, or none at all. None of this is a checklist to worry over.

  • Strong pelvic pressure
  • Frequent Braxton Hicks

  • An emotional rollercoaster

This week’s checklist

  • Rest whenever you can — you'll need your energy
  • Eat well and stay hydrated — your body needs fuel

What’s normal this week

Most of what you’re feeling is your body doing exactly what it should — the everyday symptoms don’t need a call. The signs below are the rare exceptions: noticing one doesn’t mean something’s wrong, just that it’s worth a quick check.

When to call your doctor

  • Contractions following the 5-1-1 pattern
  • Water breaking (note the color and time)
  • Baby's movements significantly decrease
  • Any bright red bleeding
